The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) and the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University have recently joined forces to analyze the fall 2020 MAP test results.
They discovered that the majority of students’ academic performance declined, with a particular decline in mathematics. Although reading achievement was comparable to that of a typical school year in some ways, math MAP test scores decreased by between 5 and 10 points. This may be the cause of your child’s math performance decline over the past year.

With the most recent research developments, let’s examine the MAP Assessments’ what, how, and when and how details.

What are NWEA MAP Evaluations?
NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) is the non-profit educational organization responsible for administering the MAP exam. MAP, which stands for Measures of Academic Progress, refers to tests administered multiple times throughout the school year to evaluate your child’s progress in a variety of subjects.

Reading and math assessments are administered to students in kindergarten through second grade. Similarly, students in the second through twelfth grades take tests in reading, language usage, mathematics, and science. Additionally, the test evaluates the college and career readiness of older students.
What are the procedures for administering the NWEA MAP Assessments?
The online exams are typically administered during the normal academic day, on three distinct dates: at the beginning of the year, in the middle of the year, and at the end of the school year.
However, the schedule is somewhat different this year. School districts that have adopted NWEA MAP testing have endeavored to implement COVID-friendly modifications to ensure assessments continue to be administered securely. The NWEA MAP website also features test-taking exercises that you and your child can complete prior to the day of the exam.
NWEA assessments are not multiple-choice timed exams. In addition, they are adaptable, meaning they change based on students’ responses. Because all examinations are administered electronically, the difficulty of the questions varies according to the responses students provide.
If, for example, the student is able to answer correctly and the next question is also correct, it becomes more challenging. If a student is unable to answer a question, the subsequent questions will become progressively easier until the student can respond correctly.
This feature enables tests to determine each student’s proficiency level. This facilitates the planning of interventions for struggling students and extracurricular activities for those who have mastered grade-level material. Even with the presence of distance learning, teachers can modify instruction to meet the needs of each student.
What is the NWEA Score report for the MAP?
After each test has been completed, you will receive a score report. It will indicate how your child’s score compares to others and whether he or she is performing above or below grade level.
The report of scores may initially appear intimidating, but it contains useful information that, once mastered, is relatively simple to comprehend. Here is a list of things to watch out for when you receive your child’s report card:
The score report for your child is based on what is known as your RIT (Rasch Unit) score. It is a type of measurement that reveals which skills your child has mastered and is prepared for the next challenge, or needs additional instruction in.
The children’s RIT score is determined by the accuracy of their performance on the tested skills. If your child answered fewer than 50 percent of the questions in a particular skillset correctly, those skills are considered to require training. However, the skills that the student is acquiring are those for which he or she scored at or above 50 percent. The areas of expertise in the 50th percentile are those that your child is most likely to benefit from studying next.
