WAEC Questions and Answers on Food and Nutrition

Question 1
Can putting food in a microwave cause cancer?

Answer 1: A lot of people have asked if it’s safe to reheat food from the night before in these ovens. When they hear the word “radiation,” they get worried.

Even though continuous exposure to high-frequency radiation like gamma rays and some types of ultraviolet radiation can damage cells and raise the risk of cancer, microwaves only use low-frequency radiation for short periods.

Microwaves only work when the oven is on and the door is shut, so they don’t always give off radiation.

The World Health Organization and the World Cancer Research Fund say that microwaves are safe as long as the door closes properly and there are no dents or leaks.

Question 2 Do I need to drink milk to get calcium?

Answer 2: There is a lot of calcium in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Each serving of these foods has between 250 and 350 mg of calcium. (Adults need 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium every day, depending on their age and gender.)

Milk and other dairy products are an easy way to get enough calcium, but they aren’t the only way.

As long as the bones are eaten, a cup of canned salmon or sardines has 300 mg of calcium. So do fortified plant-based drinks (such as those made from almonds, oats, cashews, and so on).

Each serving of kale, almonds, white beans, and tofu has about 100 milligrams of calcium, while a cup of broccoli has only 40 milligrams. In the end, it comes down to the fact that calcium is more important than milk.

You can get enough calcium whether you eat dairy or not if you plan ahead.

Question 3: Is it enough to just get rid of the salt shaker to cut down on sodium?

Answer 3: People with heart or kidney problems are often told to cut back on sodium, but leaving out a pinch of salt is not enough.

Only 11% of the sodium we eat comes from the salt we put on our food or use in cooking. 71 percent of sodium is found in processed, packaged, and restaurant foods.

If you want to cut down on how much salt you eat, choose fresh, natural meals over processed foods and fast food. If you can’t do this, look at the labels of similar foods and choose the one with less salt.
