WAEC General Agriculture

This curriculum has been designed to test students’ knowledge and abilities in managing the soil, growing crops and raising livestock, as well as in the preparation, storage, and marketing of agricultural products and in maintaining financial records.

It will make it easier to evaluate candidates’ technical, scientific, and vocational aptitude for tertiary education and for the numerous sub-sectors of agriculture.

Aims and Objectives

The syllabus is designed to assess candidates’

  • knowledge and understanding of agricultural principles and practices;
  • skills in laboratory and field work involving carrying out agricultural experiments, projects and farm work;
  • scientific skills including observation, classification and  interpretation of agricultural data;
  • skills in setting up and managing agribusinesses;
  • ability to apply scientific knowledge and skills in solving agricultural problems;
  • understanding of the value chain concept for maintaining food quality and safety standards.

Scheme of Examination

Papers 1, 2, and 3 are the three required papers that must all be taken. Papers 1 and 2 will be taken together as a composite paper in a single sitting.

The first paper will include 50 multiple-choice objective questions that must all be solved in one hour for 50 marks.

Ten essay questions will be included in PAPER 2, and they will be broken up into five sections, with Sections A, B, C, D, and E addressing the following topics on the syllabus:

  • Section A:   Introduction to Agriculture and Farm Mechanization
  • Section B:   Soil Uses and Management
  • Section C:   Crop production
  • Section D:   Animal Production
  • Section E:   Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness and Extension.

There will be two questions in each area. For a total of 16 marks, candidates must respond to just one question from each area. There will be a 2-hour paper.

PAPER 3: Will serve as a practical test for applicants to schools or serve as a substitute for a practical task.
